Design a fully independent self-service system for Whole Foods that:
- Allows users easily scan items, weight produce, and checkouts without having to remove any items from their carts,
- Environmentally Friendly - reusable bags,
- Minimizes materials and space used building the carts,
- Finally, follows the philosophy of Whole Foods: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Whole Foods uses green to represent the environmentally friendly choices that the company tries to make. They follow the philosophy known as The 3 R’s: Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle. Alternative Energy also plays a big role in the company. They are currently working to power their stores strictly through wind and solar power, and even received the Green Power Leadership Award in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Pain Points

  • Large items are difficult to scan,

  • Searching for produce items can take ages,

  • Space for scanned items isn't large enough for many items,

  • Canceled items require helps from customer service,

During ideation stage is to come up with many designs that address not one but many possible solutions. Next step is exploring the variety of shapes and forms that help solving the problem with as little designs as possible.
